PHILLIPSBURG, Sint MaartenPrincess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) is among 32 airports worldwide shortlisted by a panel of high-profile travel industry experts in this year’s PrivateFly.com top 10 most stunning global airport approaches.
The online voting by travel fans will determine the world’s Top 10 airport approaches from this shortlist – with the airport that receives the most votes named the world’s most stunning landing. The poll closes on the last day of December, 2012. www.PrivateFly.com is the leading online booking platform for private aviation charter.
In the 2010 edition of the World’s Most Stunning Airport Approaches, PJIA placed second, with number one position going to the Alpine airport of Sion in Switzerland. (SXM is the international designator code for PJIA.) Aruba, St. Barths, Bermuda, Virgin Gorda (BVI), and Mustique (St. Vincent and the Grenadines) are the other Caribbean airports on the shortlist.
“We are happy to be shortlisted again this year,” said Regina LaBega, Managing Director of Princess Juliana International Airport operating company (PJIAE). “We encourage all our friends and users of the airport to vote online before the end of this month so that we could come out tops in this poll.”

LaBega mentioned the “huge PR benefits” that normally accompanies such ranking, and the possibility that this could contribute to increased arrivals for the island. “Those who are on the panel to choose the shortlist are world-renowned experts in the travel and aviation industry. This makes the nomination of our airport even more important,” LaBega noted.
The panelists include personalities such as Sarah Miller, a travel and lifestyle journalist with over 30 years experience, and the launch editor of Conde Nast Traveller UK in 1997 and former deputy editor of The Sunday Times Style magazine.
Also on the panel are David Scowsill, President and CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC); Peter Myers, editor of the business traveler pages on Reuters.com; Murdo Morrison, editor of Flight International, the world’s oldest aviation weekly, and Patrick Jephson, Editor of the Hawker Beechcraft Journey magazine. Jephson is also a New York Times bestseller and a qualified private pilot.
