Tourism and Crime on Sint Maarten
Often we read of crimes in the local Newspapers on Sint Maarten. There are a variety of tourists that come to these islands, I want to highlight a very dangerous practise. Certain tourists come to the Caribbean to indulge in sex and drugs. The sex trade on these islands is fueled by a myriad of causes. The lack of financial stability in certain Caribbean islands, facilitated the flight of many poor and uneducated women to islnads that feared better. The conditions in which they live are nothing short of slavery. Tourists engage in a variety of crimes sometimes knowingly and at others unwittingly. Many "prostitutes" are underaged not those in the brothels but those who engage in casual sex with tourist's. These "prostitutes', can be males as well as females. The incidence of heavily i.e. junkies are the main servers in said industry and they are mostly male. This is very unfortunate but it happens mostly as a result of the way the island is marketed abroad.

more to come soon. Some crime caused by skewed marketing.
ReplyDeleteThe island is marketed as a haven of sex and fun in the sun. The image of hyper sexual black males drinking rum and being the studs for the tourist's is an often times encouraged mythical cariacriture, that blures the line of fantasy and illusion. The high incidence of brothels and adult entertainment nightclubs, have mainly served not as an economic catalyst but these establishments have weakened the morals of the people of Caribbean descent. The casino's have served to enslave many to a disastrous gambling habit. Education in such a Hedonist environment must of necassity suffer as the so called hustle is seen as a viable ecnomic alternative to work.
