AFRICA-CARIBBEAN BUSINESS COUNCIL LEADERSHIP AWARD.

Africa-Caribbean Business Council and City of Philadelphia gives Award for Leadership to Trinidad's Ambassador Parsan

Philadelphia, PA – H.E. Dr. Neil Parsan, Ambassador of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the United States of America was honoured by the African Caribbean Business Council (ACBC) with an Award for Leadership for his deep commitment to promoting business for Trinidad and Tobago and closer cooperation between Africa, American and the Caribbean businesses. The City of Philadelphia also recognized Dr. Parsan for his significant contribution to building partnerships for Local and Global Economic Development.

According to the President of ACBC, Dr. Azuka, Amb. Parsan was selected “for his indefatigable efforts in promoting his beloved country of Trinidad and Tobago and the leadership role he continues to play in the International Community within this country...”

Ambassador Parsan also served as the keynote speaker in the forum where he spoke about “The Impact of Globalization on African and Caribbean Economies.” In his address, Ambassador Parsan highlighted that for Caribbean countries specifically globalization has been reflected in relatively increased liberalization, market-opening policies and increased open regionalism. He mentioned that the free movement of skilled CARICOM nationals is one noteworthy aspect of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME).

Ambassador Parsan also spoke about the ill-effects that globalization has brought to some of the fragile economies in the region. Technological advances have made communication and technical issues easier for those involved in the drug trade and have greatly enabled them to expand their market. He argued that it is therefore imperative that the Caribbean invest in advanced technology that can adequately combat the drug trade.

With respect to African economies, Ambassador Parsan mentioned that the world’s attention to Africa has created a plethora of new opportunities. The global demand for Africa’s energy and resources has increased dramatically in recent years and as a result resource rich countries on the continent are able to establish a primary industrial system to create the conditions for economic diversity. Like the Caribbean, globalization has also brought some ill-effects to Africa in the form of brain drain or “skills poaching.”

Ambassador Parsan said “globalization is only an opportunity for prosperity and not a guarantee...”

The ACBC is a Pennsylvania-based non-profit corporation which was founded in 2006 with the mission to promoting and preserving the business interests of African and Caribbean businesspersons in the Greater Philadelphia area while bridging the cultural divide between member countries and the larger community through education and the encouragement of mutual tolerance.
